The following standards apply to all K9s:

K9 Standards:

Each canine has been tested by International Police K9 standards. X-rays of hips, elbows, and spine are provided to assure the soundness of the joints. A complete medical examination has been performed, with complete blood testing, also checking; gait, skin, coat, teeth, heart and found clear of intestinal parasites. Appropriate immunizations are always up to date.

The K9 Working Dogs Police K9 Prospect has been selected for attitude and behavior, and evaluated for the following:

• Must be generally alert, active, outgoing, curious and confident.
• Must display basic socialization and tolerance to people.
• Has been tested for confidence in nighttime situations as well as inside and outside of buildings.
• Will be observed on different types of floor surfaces, and stairs.
• Will be evaluated for gunfire confidence and noise sensitivity levels.
• Patrol K9's and Dual Purpose K9's undergo a Defense Test, which assesses the K9 Prospect’s drive, confidence, and physical ability to fight for itself or handler when faced with any threat.
